The 40 cm / 45 Type 94 is a Japanese naval gun that, contrary to its designation, had a caliber of 460 mm from the interwar period and World War II. The weapon was developed in the late 1930s and entered service in the Japanese Navy in 1940. It was the main armament of the Yamato and Musashi battleships. The Naval Arsenal in Kure was responsible for its production. The total weight of the gun was approximately 147 tons, and its barrel was 21.13 meters long. The initial velocity of the missiles was up to 780 m / s, while for 5,000-30,000 meters it ranged from 475 to 690 m / s. The cannon fired projectiles weighing from 1,360 to 1,460 kilograms, and its maximum firing range was 42,000 meters, while the effective shot range was from 25,000 to 30,000 meters. The maximum theoretical rate of fire for this gun was up to 2 rounds per minute. The presented cannon was the largest and most powerful naval gun used during World War II, making the Yamato-class battleships the most heavily armed unit in its class. It is assumed that a total of 25-27 guns of this type were built.
