Heller 80889 Le Glorieux

La Glorieux was a French battleship from the 18th century. The unit was launched in 1756. The ship was built in a shipyard in the city of Rochefort in France. The vessel was 53 m long by 14.4 m wide. Its displacement was about 1700 tons. The ship was armed with 74 on-board guns, and its crew consisted of about 600 people.

La Glorieux was created according to the plans of a constructor named Clarin-Deslaupiers. The unit also received fittings made of copper sheets on the hull, which, on the one hand, improved its performance, and, on the other hand, had a very positive effect on extending the life of the hull. La Glorieux also had good seaworthiness and good maneuverability for a ship of this size. The ship entered service with the French Navy in the same year that the Seven Years' War began, but with a rather limited participation. In 1777, the ship was rebuilt. Two years later, as part of the so-called The American Squadron La Glorieux was sent to fight the British fleet off the American coast in the course of the ongoing war for US independence there. The unit took part in the Battle of the Dominican Republic in 1782 and was captured by the British. In the same course, it was lost by the Royal Navy in a storm.
