Od jesieni 1932 powsta³y trzy prototypy oznaczone symbolami: PZL - 23/I, PZL - 23/II i PZL - 23/III. Badania wytrzyma³o¶ciowe i statyczne PZL - 23/I zakoñczono w drugiej po³owie 1933 r. Prototyp wzbi³ siê w powietrze pod koniec 1934 r. W kolejnych wersjach do¶wiadczalnych dokonywano wielu poprawek takich jak: likwidacja wibracji tylnej czê¶ci kad³uba i usterzenia wysoko¶ci, wzmocnienie konstrukcji p³ata, poprawa widoczno¶ci z fotela pilota poprzez zwiêkszenie przeszklenia kabiny, opuszczenia o 10 cm miejsca mocowania silnika, zastosowanie nowego pier¶cienia o mniejszym wspó³czynniki Cx, zlikwidowano w kad³ubie komorê bombow±, przenosz±c wyrzutniki pod skrzyd³a i pod kad³ub i wiele innych. £±cznie wprowadzono ponad 100 zmian i usuniêto kilkaset usterek. Wersjê wzorcow± pod nazw± PZL - 23 Kara¶ A wprowadzono do produkcji (od po³owy 1935 r.) w liczbie 40 szt. w nowym zak³adzie PZL WP-1 (Podlaskie Zak³ady Lotnicze - Wytwórnia P³atowców nr 1) i sukcesywnie wchodzi³y one do uzbrojenia 1 Pu³ku Lotniczego oraz eksportowane by³y do Bu³garii. Podczas eksploatacji tego samolotu pojawia³y siê nowe usterki (m.in. zbyt s³aby silnik, osi±ganie ma³ego pu³apu z pe³nym uzbrojeniem, ma³a skuteczno¶æ skrzeli itd.). W wyniku likwidacji tych usterek, powsta³a druga wersja samolotu PZL - 23 Kara¶ B. Mia³ on mocniejszy silnik (Bristol Pegasus VIII o mocy 680 KM, zlikwidowano skrzela, wprowadzono ulepszone wyprofilowanie przej¶cia pomiêdzy stykiem kad³uba i skrzyd³a). Umowa z PZL opiewa³a na wyprodukowanie 210 samolotów w wersji B. Od jesieni 1936 r. zaczêto je dostarczaæ do pu³ków lotniczych. W drugiej po³owie lat 30-tych, samolot PZL - 23 B Kara¶ sta³ siê podstawowym samolotem liniowym, natomiast Karasie w wersji A wycofano do szkolnictwa. Pe³ni±c s³u¿bê w Polskim Lotnictwie Wojskowym, Karasie wykorzystano w kilku wiêkszych akcjach. W 1937 r. dywizjon Karasi B z 1 P.L. wykona³ pokazowe ostre bombardowanie ma³ej stacji kolejowej na linii Che³m - Brze¶æ n/B. Kilka dywizjonów liniowych skoncentrowano na lotnisku Wilno - Porubanek w ramach demonstracji si³y wobec s±siaduj±cej Litwy, natomiast w pa¼dzierniku 1938 r. kilkana¶cie Karasi z ró¿nych pu³ków stacjonowa³o na lotnisku w Aleksandrowie, zabezpieczaj±c zajêcie Zaolzia. Zgodnie z zasadami u¿ycie Karasi, przeznaczano je do wykonywania zadañ interwencyjnych. W kampanii wrze¶niowej wykonywa³y one niektóre zadania bojowe i rozpoznanie z powietrza. Samoloty wchodz±ce w sk³ad eskadr armijnych, Karasie bombardowa³y kolumny pancerne, wykonywa³y dalekie rajdy rozpoznawcze, na terytoria Niemiec, S³owacji i Prus Wschodnich. Pierwszym zbombardowanym obiektem na terytorium przeciwnika by³a fabryka w rejonie O³awy oraz bombardowano obiekty strategiczne na terenie Prus Wschodnich. Du¿a liczba wykonywanych zadañ spowodowa³a ok. 90% straty w samolotach. Ogó³em w kampanii wrze¶niowej zestrzelono 112 Karasi, a do Rumunii ewakuowano zaledwie 11 maszyn (trzy z 31 eskadry i osiem z 24 eskadry rozpoznawczej). Oprócz tego, w Rumunii znalaz³o siê 30 Karasi w wersji "A" z CWL - 1 (przekroczy³y granice w dniu 16.09 1939 r.). Po w³±czeniu Rumunii do "Paktu Trzech", w internowanych Karasiach wymieniono uzbrojenie na niemieckie i sformowano z nich eskadrê rozpoznawcz± i szkolno-treningow±. Rumunie u¿ywali Karasi na froncie wschodnim. Ostatni Kara¶ wykorzystywany by³ w Rumunii do 1946 r., jako holownik celu powietrznego.
From the fall of 1932, three prototypes were built, marked with symbols: PZL - 23 / I, PZL - 23 / II and PZL - 23 / III. Strength and static tests of the PZL - 23 / I were completed in the second half of 1933. The prototype took off at the end of 1934. In subsequent experimental versions, many improvements were made, such as: elimination of vibration of the rear part of the fuselage and height tail, strengthening of the airframe structure, improvement visibility from the pilot's seat by increasing the cabin glazing, lowering the engine mounting place by 10 cm, the use of a new ring with a lower Cx coefficient, the bomb chamber in the fuselage was removed, ejectors were moved under the wings and under the fuselage, and many others. In total, over 100 changes have been made and several hundred bugs have been fixed. The model version under the name PZL - 23 Kara¶ A was introduced into production (from mid-1935) in the number of 40 pieces in the new PZL WP-1 plant (Podlaskie Zak³ady Lotnicze - Wytwórnia P³atowców No. 1) and successively entered the armament of the 1st Aviation Regiment and were exported to Bulgaria. During the operation of this aircraft, new defects appeared (including too weak engine, reaching a low altitude with full weapons, low efficiency of the gills, etc.). As a result of the elimination of these defects, the second version of the PZL - 23 Kara¶ B aircraft was created. It had a more powerful engine (Bristol Pegasus VIII with 680 HP, gills were removed, improved profiling of the transition between the fuselage and the wing was introduced). The contract with PZL was for the production of 210 aircraft in version B. In the fall of 1936, they began to be delivered to aviation regiments. In the second half of the 1930s, the PZL - 23 B Kara¶ aircraft became the basic line aircraft, while the A version of the Karasie was withdrawn for schooling. While serving in the Polish Military Aviation, Karas was used in several larger actions. In 1937, the Karasi B squadron from 1 PL carried out a demonstration sharp bombing of a small railway station on the Che³m - Brest n / B line. Several line squadrons were concentrated at the Vilnius - Porubanek airport as part of a demonstration of strength against neighboring Lithuania, while in October 1938 a dozen or so Karas from various regiments were stationed at the airport in Aleksandrów, securing the capture of Zaolzie. According to the rules, the use of Karasi was intended for the performance of intervention tasks. In the September campaign, they performed some combat tasks and aerial reconnaissance. Airplanes included in the army squadrons bombed armored columns, carried out long reconnaissance raids on the territories of Germany, Slovakia and East Prussia. The first facility to be bombed on the enemy's territory was a factory near O³awa. Strategic objects in East Prussia were bombed. A large number of tasks performed resulted in approx. 90% losses in airplanes. In total, 112 Karasi were shot down in the September campaign, and only 11 machines were evacuated to Romania (three from the 31 squadron and eight from the 24 reconnaissance squadron). In addition, there were 30 Karasi in version A with CWL - 1 in Romania (they crossed the border on September 16, 1939). After Romania was included in the Pact of Three, the interned Karas was exchanged for German weapons and a reconnaissance and training squadron was formed. The Romanians used Karasi on the Eastern Front. The last Karas was used in Romania until 1946 as an air target tugboat. Technical data (version B): length: 9.68 m, wingspan: 13.95 m, height: 3.3 m, maximum speed: 319 km / h, climb speed: 6.7 m / s, practical ceiling: 7300 m, maximum range: 1260 km, armament: fixed - 2 Vickers F machine guns cal. 7.7 mm, 1 machine gun wz.33 cal. 7.92 mm, suspended - up to 700 kg of bombs.
